Presidential Homesteads in the Plantation South

Several U.S. presidents–George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and Andrew Jackson–are closely connected with the plantation houses in which they lived.  These stately homes all included neoclassical elements of various kinds, be they drawn from ancient Greece and Rome or from more contemporary interpretations of the classical tradition in England and France. The neoclassicism of these storied houses projected the sophistication of their owners and famous inhabitants.

Join Dr. Kevin D. Murphy on an exploration of the architectural influences of these famous homesteads. Dr. Murphy is the Andrew W. Mellon Chair in the Humanities and Professor and Chair of the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Vanderbilt University.

Raise a glass to the past! The History Uncorked series offers an opportunity to engage with a variety of historical topics while enjoying the community of your fellow history aficionados. With each program focusing on a particular topic, followed by a lively discussion in a casual setting, History Uncorked is an evening of wine, wisdom and words, offered in partnership with Natchez Hills Winery.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for guests to gather, with the presentation starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for Hermitage Members and $15 for Non-Members and include one glass of wine from Natchez Hills Winery. Light snacks and additional drinks are available for purchase.

A portion of all sales will support the Andrew Jackson Foundation’s mission to preserve the home place of Andrew Jackson, create learning opportunities and inspire informed citizenship.
