The experience of going downtown for shopping is a beloved memory for many Nashvillians. Castner-Knott was one of the “big three” department stores of Nashville and a popular shopping destination for decades. As one of the pioneers of the department store concept in Nashville, Castner-Knott Dry Goods Company opened in 1898 on 5th Avenue. In 1906 it moved to a new building built on the corner of Church and Capitol Boulevard. The success and longevity of the business is also of great interest. The building itself is iconic and is now on the national register of historic places. Our tour will cover all the floors of this former dept. store, which closed in 1996 and is now commercially leased.
An optional second tour will be offered to another historical building a short walk away that is more than 100 years old and an important historical site is also located nearby.
Tour will be hosted by Mike Shmerling and light food and beverage will be available after the tours (Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, muffins and bagels).
Note: there is no designated parking for this tour. Please utilize parking on any adjoining streets and garages. Members should meet at the corner near Morton’s Steakhouse.
Hope to see you there!
